Two research firms, Strategy Analytics and IDC, today reported that the global mobile phone sales increases more than 10 percent in 2009 and 11.3 percent in the last quarter of 2009. The market leaders of mobile phone are Nokia, Samsung, and LG, with Samsung is trying hard to get bigger market share from Nokia, whose has about 40 percent market share. In the last quarter of 2009, Samsung sold 69 million phones, up 31 percent over the last quarter of 2008. Apple, at the meanwhile, shipped a record 8.7 million iPhones and reached 2.7 percent market share in the fourth quarter of 2009. The market shares of Samsung, LG, and Motorola are 17.1 percent, 8.8 percent, and 3.7 percent respectively.

Motorola’s co-CEO, Sanjay Jha, said in the recent Motorola earnings calls that they plan to ship “at least 20 devices, including at least one direct-to-consumer device with Google.” Direct-to-Consumer is the business model that Google uses to sell Nexus One, a powerful Android-powered smartphone that is made by HTC. It is quite certain that Motorola’s Direct-to-Consumer phone will continue to use the name of “Nexus One”, the brand that Google is pushing hard to fight against Apple’s iPhone.

Sharp’s new solar powered phone, Sharp SH 7120C, is leaked in the Internet. The new SH7120C has 180-degree rotational screen and flip style design. Instead of having a secondary screen on the front cover, the front cover of the 7120C phone is replaced with a solar panel. Features of the phone include a 5-megapixel digital camera, GPS , MP3 player, Video player, and a Micro SDHC memory expansion slot.
